BBQ: Hong Kong Style
My students invited me to a bbq last week. It was not quite what you would expect. We met at a business establishment that provides the space, materials, food, and beverages for the entire operation. It involves cooking your own meat (squid, chicken, beef, and prawns) on long skewers over an open fire. A very communal affair. This is the way bbq is done in Hong Kong.

This speaks volumes about you as a professor and human being. You connect with students and people in ways few people can. How many of us remember professors we'd rather NEVER see again, let alone invite to a group dinner for fun? Nice David. Nice.
ReplyDeleteDr. Jaffee,
ReplyDeleteI find myself being jealous of your students and you for having this experience. As a professor, you have always been open to sharing a meal or a car ride or your personal time with your students. It is these moments that will last in our minds forever.
Also - what is bbq sauce in China?
Eliz.
The location is in the country side and yes this is Hong Kong style Barbecue. People can have beer drinking together without police interrupted. The basic sauce for Hong Kong barbecue is salt, soy sauce, pepper, wine, oil, & sugar. When it is nearly done, you can spread honey on them. Yummy!

Thanks for the kind words. I have a really great group of students here. They also find me to be a bit of a curiosity.
ReplyDeleteYes, honey was the sauce of choice.
Some of the meat was also marinated.

So amazing that I saw Bill Sample yesterday and he was saying how you and Jerry B were two of the faculty here who were the most engaged with students.
ReplyDeleteOf course I knew that already :) and now this on your blog today - just lovely.
Miss you!

David,
ReplyDeleteI think we should emulate this BBQ phenomena in your backyard in Jacksonville. I'll be the first there.
